Papst Franziskus schenkt dem Ökumenischen Rat der Kirchen (ÖRK) eine Bronzestatue des gekreuzigten Christus für die Kapelle des Ökumenischen Zentrums.
ECUMENICAL MEETING IN THE WCC ECUMENICAL CENTRE GIFT
Sculpture «Crucifixion». Gift offered to the Ecumenical Chapel of the Ecumenical Centre of the World Council of Churches.
Produced in 1990 in a single piece in bronze using the ancient lost wax technique, the author of this Crucifixion is Alberto Ghinzani, from Pavia. Although at a first impression this small sculpture leads us to think of a classical representation in a contemporary style of Jesus Christ on the cross, the real intentions of the sculptor were quite different. Upon closer inspection, we see that this man with a face distraught with pain does not have a beard, and is not even crowned with thorns. His arms are stretched out as if on the cross, and his hands are visibly nailed, and his body is not free since his legs are tightly tied to a pole – that of slavery, physical and moral exploitation, illegal and underpaid labour, alluded to by the plough to his right.
Thus transmitting that very desperation, violence and horror that can be felt when faced with a man who has been first brutally scourged and then crucified, the artist wished to create a disarming representation of certain inhuman conditions of life that are found not only in many peripheries in the world, but often also beneath the indifferent gaze of those who live in the developed West. If it is the hope of His Holiness Pope Francis that everyone should make an effort to rescue the marginalized from the drift of misery so as to restore to them their just dignity, this Crucifixion brings to mind not only Psalm 118, «the stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone«, but also Matthew 25: 40: «Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did it for me«.
Scultura «Crocifissione«. Dono offerto alla Cappella Ecumenica del Centro Ecumenico del Consiglio Mondiale delle Chiese.
Realizzata nel 1990 in un unico pezzo in bronzo con l’antica tecnica della fusione a cera persa, l’autore di questa Crocifissione è il pavese Alberto Ghinzani. Seppure fin dal primo impatto questa piccola scultura conduca a pensare ad una classica rappresentazione in chiave contemporanea di un Gesù Cristo in Croce, le reali intenzioni del suo autore sono state ben diverse. Già, perché a ben guardare, quest’uomo dal volto affranto dal dolore non porta la barba e non è neppure coronato di spine. Ha sì le braccia distese come sulla croce e le mani visibilmente inchiodate, ma il suo corpo non è abbandonato a se stesso, perché le sue gambe sono strettamente legate ad un palo… quello della schiavitù, dello sfruttamento fisico e morale, quello del lavoro nero e sottopagato a cui vuol alludere quell’aratro alla sua destra.
Riuscendo quindi a trasmettere tutta quella stessa disperazione, violenza e orrore che si può provare davanti ad un uomo che è stato prima brutalmente flagellato e poi anche crocifisso, l’artista ha voluto infatti creare una disarmante rappresentazione di certe disumane condizioni di vita che si consumano non solo in molte periferie del mondo, ma spesso e volentieri anche sotto lo sguardo indifferente di chi vive nell’evoluto occidente. Se la speranza di Sua Santità Papa Francesco è che tutti si diano da fare per sottrarre dalla deriva della miseria il popolo degli emarginati, così da restituire loro la giusta dignità, questa Crocifissione ci riporta alla mente non solo il Salmo 117, «La pietra scartata dai costruttori è divenuta testata d’angolo«, ma anche Matteo 25, 40: «Ogni volta che avete fatto queste cose a uno solo di questi miei fratelli più piccoli, l’avete fatto a me«.
